Who this is

This site, chrisebutler.com, is run by Chris Butler in a personal capacity, as a sole trader, not through a registered company. For data protection purposes, Chris Butler is the "data controller" for the personal data described below. Contact details are on the contact page.

What personal data is collected

Two forms on this site collect personal data directly:

• Newsletter signup: your email address, passed to Buttondown, the third-party service used to send the newsletter.
• Contact form: your name, email address, chosen reason for contact, and message content, sent so your enquiry can be answered.

Why it's collected and the legal basis

Newsletter emails are collected on the basis of your consent, given when you submit the signup form. You can withdraw that consent at any time by unsubscribing, using the link in any newsletter email.

Contact form details are collected on the basis of legitimate interest, specifically responding to enquiries that are sent to us directly.

Where it's stored

Newsletter addresses are stored by Buttondown, not on this site's own server. Buttondown's handling of that data is covered by Buttondown's privacy policy.

Who it's shared with

How long it's kept

Newsletter addresses are kept for as long as you remain subscribed. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to ask what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to how it's used. To exercise any of these, get in touch via the contact page.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you believe your data has been mishandled.
